Eastin, Brown highlight Springfield Invite for MHS Tennis

SPRINGFIELD — The Mattoon girls tennis team competed at the Springfield Invite Friday and Saturday and the No. 1 doubles team of Kyah Eastin and Amari Brown went 1-2.

“They both played very well for the first time out this year,” said Mattoon tennis coach Dwight Perry. “They are both seniors, and I think they will do well this year. I was really pleased with how they played. I thought Eastin played really well at No. 1 singles. We didn’t get back to the hotel until midnight and it was hot Saturday, and getting up and playing at 8:30 a.m. was demanding on the girls.”

The No. 3 doubles team of Emily Stortzum and Canyn Borntrager went 2-2.

“It was their first time playing together and they are both sophomores,” said Perry. “I could see some improvement each match.”

Mattoon is to play host to Shelbyville Monday at 4:15 p.m. and are scheduled to play Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday as well.

“The tournament was down from 16 to 12 teams, but it was good for the girls to get to play,” said Perry. “The only problem I have is I saw so many things we need to work on, but with so many matches this week we won’t have time to work on things.”
