AREA ROUNDUP: Stenzel has record day for Seneca girls golf

MORRIS — Seneca High School freshman Rylee Stenzel had a day to remember Thursday at the Nettle Creek Golf Course, posting the lowest score ever in IHSA competition by a Lady Irish golfer, a medalist 37, to pace her school to a 210-231 victory over Lisle and a partial team from Coal City.

Faith Hacker was next for the winners with a 49, Monica Groth a 60 and Krista Eikleberry a 64 to round out the SHS round.

Yorkville 199, Sandwich 250

At Edgebrook, the Sandwich girls fell despite a personal-best score of 52 by Alijah Campbell. Jillian Fuchs added a 60, Morgan Ross a 68 and Grace Donahue and Josie Gonzalez each a 70 for SHS (3-2).

Boys golf

Ottawa 161, Rochelle 195

At the Deer Park Country Club in Oglesby, the Pirates used an even-par score of 35 from the day’s medalist, T.J. McDonnell, to defeat the Hubs in NIB 12 Conference action. Joe Connell added a 39, Kadon Harth a 43 and Caden Ericzon a 44 for OHS, which lifted its record to 1-2 on the season, 1-1 in the league.

Yorkville 165, Sandwich 237

At the Edgebrook Golf Course in Sandwich, Ryan Pruski led the Indians with a 55 and Connor Wilson added a 56, but the home team fell. Tyler Bols added a 59 and Michael Barbey a 67 for the Sandwich final.

Soccer

Newark-Seneca 3, Morris 1

At Morris, Connor Swanson and Shane Cameron each notched a goal and an assist to pace the Norsemen to the nonconference win. Jacob Chapman turned in a goal, Steve Bartkus an assist and Silas Odum made four saves for NHS, now 6-1 this season.

Earlville-Leland-Paw Paw 4, Oregon 0

At Oregon, three goals from Devyn Kennedy set the tone for the Raiders. Manny Gomez chipped in a goal and an assist, Landon Larkin two assists and Jake Pickert one in the victory, helped along by Mikey Sansone’s five-save shutout play in goal.

Peotone 7, Sandwich 0

At Peotone, the Blue Devils notched all seven goals on just 10 shots on goal to claim the Interstate Eight Conference win. Sead Sejdiu made three saves for the Indians, now 0-8 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

Girls swimming

L-P/Ottawa/Streator/Earlville 53, DeKalb 41

At La Salle, the L-P/Ottawa/Streator/Earlville swim team scored a big win over DeKalb on Thursday night at the L-P pool.

Ashley Heagy took part in four wins on the day, winning the 200 freestyle (2:07.74) and the 100 butterfly (1:03.98) and also helping Payton Heagy, Nicole Pocivasek and Julie Gromm win the 200 medley relay (2:02.19) and the 400 freestyle relay (4:04.47). Pocivasek was also the winner of the 100 breaststroke (5:46.92) and runner-up in the 200 individual medley, while Peyton Heagy was first in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.75) and second in the 200 IM.

Winning the 200 freestyle relay in 2:01.21 were Emma Mertes, Emma White, Sam Satterfield and Cora Walker. Gromm placed second in the 100 backstroke.

Girl tennis

Ottawa 5, Morris 0

At the King Field courts in Ottawa, the Lady Pirates breezed to the shutout win. Ella Marvel was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 1 singles and Aubry Theissen a 6-0, 6-1 victor at No. 2. In doubles action, Ellie Gallagher and Regan O’Fallon won 6-3, 6-2, while Bergen Johnson and Marta Johnson claimed a tight 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-1 victory. At No. 3 doubles, Cassie Claus and Emily Walker posted a 6-1, 6-3 win.

Volleyball

Indian Creek def. Marquette 25-15, 25-21

At Shabbona, the Lady Crusaders fell in two sets to IC (2-1). No other details of the match were available at presstime.

Seneca def. Somonauk 25-3, 25-14

At Seneca, sophomore middle Madi Bromberek posted seven kills and senior Lexi Greve added five as the Lady Irish rolled to the two-set win. Grace Alley served up 12 points in the win for Seneca.

For Somonauk (0-3), Katy Tripp had two blocks and five digs, Grace Sozder two kills and Becca Harms five digs.

JUCO men’s golf

IVCC 8th at big Carl Sandberg meet

At the Lake Bracken Country Club in Galesburg, the Illinois Valley Community College golf squad scored a 325, placing it eighth among 10 teams at the Carl Sandburg Classic on Thursday. Black Hawk College Gold won with a team 292.

Patrick Guilfoyle paced the Eagles with a 74, followed by Charlie Dunkel with an 80, Ian Legner 84, Colby Robbins 87 and Peyton Pyszka 93 for IV on the day.

JV golf

Ottawa 199, Rochelle 254

At Dayton Ridge, Michael Bruner’s score of 46 led the Corsairs to the win. Blaine Koppen was right behind with a 47, while Noah Stoudt added a 49 and Megan Bassett a 57.

JV girls tennis

Otawa 3, Morris 2

At Morris, Kyleigh Olszewski was the No. 2 singles winner for the Corsairs, while Mary Riva and Haley Roalson claimed the No. 1 doubles match and Olivia Long and Michaela Boaz the No. 3 doubles meeting.

JV gorls swimming

L-P/Ottawa/Streator/Earlville 53, DeKalb 18

At La Salle, L-P/Ottawa/Streator/Earlville’s Lexi Polod won the 100 breaststroke (1:25.83) and the 200 IM (2:25.67), while Sam Satterfield captured the 50 freestyle (:31.0) and the 100 freestyle (1:11.49). Also individually, Erin Dunlap took the 200 freestyle (2:51.41) and Americus Berg the 100 butterfly (1:25.67).

L-P/O/S/E also claimed the 200 medley relay (2:32.12), the 200 freestyle relay (2:01.21) and the 400 freestyle relay (5:26.92).
