Darlington weekend is here and that means throwback paint schemes for most of the cars in the Cup Series field. Here are five of our favorites.
Keselowski’s Miller cars always have the best paint schemes. This one is no exception. It’s an update to the scheme Keselowski drove last year. So while it’s not terribly original (compared to 2017), it’s still gorgeous.
Bubba Wallace’s STP Chevrolet
You can never go wrong with a Richard Petty tribute car. This Petty Motorsports car flashes back to 1972, when the King won eight races and had 28 top-10 finishes in 31 races. Yes, he won the championship.
Hamlin’s throwback car is designed to mimic the late model he drove as a kid. His firesuit even matches what he wore back in the day. Aside from the sentimental aspect, it’s a good-looking car too.
BJ McLeod’s Jacob Companies Chevrolet
This Rick Ware Racing car will undoubtedly finish numerous laps down on Sunday night. But a throwback to Russ Wheeler’s Hardee’s car in Days of Thunder is always welcome.
Austin Dillon’s American Ethanol Chevrolet
Dillon’s paint scheme wasn’t known until Friday. There was no pre-weekend announcement about it, just like there was no announcement about the silver car Dale Earnhardt drove in the 1995 All-Star Race. That silver car started the run of special paint schemes in NASCAR over the past 20-plus years. It’s only fitting that it got the throwback treatment.
“Talking to different guys about it, how special it was and it was a secret,” Dillon said. “That is why we kind of unveiled it the way we did is they didn’t unveil this car until it rolled off the back of the trailer. And the first person that kind of got me was [former Earnhardt crew member Danny Myers] actually. I was on a radio show and he was talking about ‘what are we going to do for Darlington weekend’ and I said ‘well, I guess you will just have to wait until we get to the track’. And he was like ‘well the last time that was done and he said it was a secret too’ and he knew, so it was cool to have those guys be here and be a part of it. It’s very special for everybody I think involved at [Richard Childress Racing].”
