James Anderson: James Anderson becomes most successful fast bowler in Test cricket | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: England’s James Anderson has surpassed Australian great Glenn McGrath‘s haul of 563 wickets to become the most successful fast bowler in the history of Test cricket.

Anderson achieved the milestone during the last day of the fifth and final Test against India when he struck to clean up Mohammed Shami and take the fourth position in all time highest wicket-takers list in Tests.

Spin bowlers occupy the top three places in the overall list of Test wicket-takers – Muralitharan took 800 wickets, ahead of Australia’s Shane Warne (708) and India’s Anil Kumble (619).

Anderson, who needed three wickets in India’s second innings to etch his name in the record books, trapped Shikhar Dhawan (1) to pick his first followed by dismissing Cheteshwar Pujara for duck in the same over on the penultimate day.

Anderson (2/54), who wreaked havoc with the moving ball on Day 2, got rid of Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane in quick succession to put India on the back foot in the first innings.

With two wickets on Saturday, Anderson also overhauled Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan (105) to register the maximum wickets against India in Test cricket.

The 36-year-old Anderson made his Test debut in 2003 against Zimbabwe and has played 143 Tests for England so far. His best figures of 7/42 in Test cricket came against West Indies at Lord’s last year. The right-arm bowler has 269 wickets from 194 ODIs while he accounted for 18 wickets in 19 T20Is.

West Indies legend Courtney Walsh features sixth in the list with 519 wickets in 132 matches ahead of Kapil Dev (434 in 131 matches), Stuart Broad (433 in 123 matches) and Richard Hadlee (431 in 86 matches).
