Creighton University Athletics – Men’s Tennis Wraps Up Play At Drake Invitational

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Creighton men’s tennis team wrapped up singles action at the Drake Invitational on Sunday at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.

Joe Hoff, Stratton Brown, and Mac Mease each claimed consolation victories on Sunday morning. Both Hoff and Brown claimed straight-sets victories, while Mease won a third-set tiebreaker. 

Mease lost his first set before coming back to win the second and squeaked out a 10-8 win during the deciding set. Brown trailed 2-5 during his opening set before winning 7-6 and sealing the match with a 6-2 win in the third. Finally, Hoff claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win before the Bluejays headed back to Omaha.

Armando Gandini also played a consolation match on Sunday but fell in straight sets.

On Saturday, Gandini advanced to the semifinal round of the Flight B bracket. The junior earned a 6-4, 6-1 against an opponent from Northern Colorado during the opening round before battling for a three-set win in the second round against host Drake’s Finley Hall. Gandini opened his quarterfinal match with a 6-2 win before falling 6-2 during the second. During the deciding set, Gandini earned a 10-8 win in the tiebreaker to advance into the semifinals.

In the semis, Gandini claimed the first set before falling during the second 6-2, and 10-5 in the third against Northwest Missouri State’s Agustin Velasco. 

Brown advanced to the quarterfinals in Flight A on Saturday before falling in straight-sets against Victor Moreno Lozano (Nebraska). The sophomore battled from behind for a 7-6, 3-6, 10-1 win during the opening round against Lukas Buth from North Dakota before losing 7-5, 6-3 in his second match.

Nick Campbell also participated in the Flight A bracket and lost 6-2, 7-4 against Drake’s Barny Thorold in the first round. 

In addition to Gandini’s play in Flight B, Daniel Lopez-Rey and Mac Mease also competed in Flight B. Mease opened Saturday with a 6-2 win during his opening set, but fell 7-6 in the second and 10-1 during the deciding tiebreaker. Lopez-Rey fell during a tightly contested three-set match. The junior lost the first frame 7-6, won the second 6-4 and fell during the third set, 10-8. 

In Flight C action, Jose Oscar Diaz split a pair of three-set matches. Diaz opened Saturday with a 6-7, 7-6, 10-5 win before falling 4-6, 6-3, 10-5 during the second round against an opponent from Northwest Missouri State. Luke Moorhead fell 7-5 during the opening set of his Flight C first round match before earning a 7-6 win during the second frame. The junior fought during a close tiebreaker but fell 11-9. Moorhead ended the Bluejays’ Saturday with a 6-4, 6-4 consolation win. Additonally, Hoff fell in straight-sets against Drake’s Freedie Powell during first round action in Flight C on Saturday. 

Creighton returns to the courts on Friday for the Bluejay Invitational in Omaha.
