That’s the suggestion from NBA legend David Robinson, who believes Thompson may grow tired of being seen as the third or fourth best player on a team.
The Warriors are the heavy favourites to win a third consecutive NBA title this season, but face arguably their toughest summer yet in 2019.
Both Thompson and Kevin Durant could become free agents while Cousins will almost certainly leave.
Thompson has made it clear that he wants to re-sign with the Warriors and stay there for the entirety of his career.
However, Robinson believes the 28-year-old should consider his options.
“It’s definitely potentially their last year,” Robinson told Express Sport.
“You cannot expect that. Keeping a team like that together is nearly impossible.
“Unless you’ve got guys that are willing to say ‘I’m just going to take half the salary that I can get somewhere else and I’m going to play with you guys just because I love y’all so much’.
“That doesn’t happen.
“Does Klay Thompson always want to be third or fourth fiddle. That’s a tough deal.
“I just think if they’re able to keep this team together past this year, that’s pretty impressive.
“It speaks to their culture, it speaks to what they’ve built there.”
Cousins joined the Warriors this summer to the surprise of the rest of the league.
But Robinson isn’t so sure Golden State have actually made the right move, stating he could have a detrimental affect on their team harmony.
“DeMarcus Cousins is a big question mark as well. He’s not healthy. What’s he really going to provide for you?” Robinson added.
“Yeah another big body but JaVale McGee had done a good job. Is he going to replace JaVale McGee? JaVale knows what to do in that system and he’s really good in that system.
“It’s nice to have a talented guy in there but DeMarcus hasn’t necessarily been the chemistry guy for any team he’s been on.
“Is he going to contribute somehow by being on your bench? I don’t know if you can bet on that.
“It’s a tough call as to his real true value for them. Hopefully he gets healthy. Hopefully he comes in and he can add really good minutes and be ANOTHER scorer – like they need another scorer.
“His value is still questionable for them right now but not bad having a talented guy like that on your bench ready to come in.”
