Team Leadway Assurance led by Babalola Abdulmumin and Clifford Enosorogbe, two active former national champions, brushed aside the challenge of Team Next Gen to win their first point in the NCC Tennis League in a tie which took place at the National Stadium Surulere, Lagos over the weekend.
The up-and-coming players from Abuja were no match for the more experienced tennis stars, who won all seven matches securing the tie with an unassailable 4-0 lead on the first day.
Enosoregbe beat Joel Sylvanus 6-2, 6-4 while Abdulmumin defeated Anthony Obekpa 6-2, 6-1.
National women’s champion, Sarah Adegoke, proved too strong for Bunmi Aare, winning 6-2, 6-1. The men’s doubles match featuring doubles maestro Albert Bicom and Philip Abayomi against Next Gen’s Obekpa and John Dickson was a foregone conclusion as the Leadway Assurance team won 6-3, 6-3.
In Ado Ekiti, Team Yetade lost 5-2 to newcomers Team Luik of Lekki, Lagos.
Junior champion, Omolayo Bamidele, brushed aside a 6-0 first set loss to upset top 10 women’s player, Ronke Akingbade, 0-6, 6-4, 10-7. The other win for Team Yetade came from Odeyemi Opeyemi who beat Rilwan Morakinyo 6-4, 6-4.
