CHICAGO — Emilee Mossman wanted to make some noise at the IHSA Class 1A State Girls Tennis Tournament and Thursday she did just that.
The Effingham St. Anthony junior advanced to the championship quarterfinals and won her first and second round matches without losing a game. She faced Kate Feldman of Highland in the first round and Natalie Tabor from Ottawa Township in the second.
“I drew some good players but I ended up getting it 6-0, 6-0 in the first two rounds so it was pretty easy,” Mossman said.
Mossman won her third-round match against Fabiola Rivas from Chicago Lake View 6-3, 6-1. Rivas was placed in the No. 9-16 seedings while Mossman was seeded No. 5-8.
“That was when I first drew a seeded player and so she was a very good and had a strong forehand and she was very aggressive,” Mossman said. “We had some long points and honestly some of the points could have gone either way. I would come back from 15-40 or she would get a game where I was up. It was a long match and I think I got it in the end because I was able to frustrate her.”
Mossman moved on and plays the No. 3-4 seeded Claudia Miller of Winnetka North Shore on Friday, with the winner advancing to the championship semifinals.
Mossman advanced to the championship quarterfinals last year before picking up her first loss. Her goal this year is to qualify for a top-six medal.
“I’ve never played Claudia but from watching her today she is a very strong player and we will see how it all turns out tomorrow,” Mossman said. “I’m really hoping for a close match tomorrow so I can pull it out. It would be an upset if I beat her so I am going to bring my best and hope for a win.”
Mossman’s St. Anthony teammates Allison Kowalke and Averee Greene also found success in their first and second round matches in the doubles competition before losing in the third round to Emily Sun and Isabella Kellemeier from Chicago University 6-2, 6-3.
Two other doubles teams, Effingham’s Chloe Funneman and Lauryn Douthit and Teutopolis’ Alli Brumleve and Macy Probst, advanced to the championship third round before losing.
