Northville girls golf wins state championship, first in school history

The Northville girls golf team led after Day 1 and dominated in Day 2 to claim the Division 1 state championship. 

It’s the first girls golf state title in the school’s history. The team finished runners-up in 2004. 

The team shot a 318 on Day 1, 11 strokes better than Plymouth, which finished second. On Day 2, Northville shot a 312, the best team round of the tournament to finish with a total score for 630. 

Plymouth finished with a team score of 661. Traverse City finished third with 664. Bloomfield Hills finished with a 670 and Brighton shot a 675 to round out the top five. 

Traverse City West’s Anika Day won the individual tournament with a 68-72–140. She finished six shots ahead of Bloomfield Hills’ Mikaela Schulz, who shot a 75-71–146. Ariel Chang of Utica Eisenhower finished third with a 71-77–148. 

Northville’s top two golfers, Nicole Whatley (149) and Sufna Gill (155), finished fourth and fifth, respectively. 

Division 2 and Division 3 results were not available as of 9 p.m.

Division 4

Harbor Springs claimed the Division 4 state championship, besting second-place Shepherd by 19 strokes. 

Harbor Springs led Shepherd by 7 strokes, 362 to 369, after Day 1. But the Rams pulled away on the second day, shooting a 369 to Shepherd’s 381 on Day 2. Harbor Springs finished with a 731 total. 

North Muskegon finished third (754), Kalamazoo Hackett was fourth (757( and Lumen Christi was fifth (768). 

Columbia Central’s Alissa Fish won the individual tournament, shooting a 77-85–162.
