Liverpool’s win at Huddersfield revealed Jurgen Klopp’s new tactics

Huddersfield 0 – Liverpool 1

Liverpool kept up pace with Man City at the top of the Premier League on Saturday.

Mohamed Salah returned to goalscoring action bagging the only goal of the game against the Terriers.

Liverpool have 23 points from nine games in the league and a +13 goal difference.

Man City hold top spot by virtue of their +23 goal difference.

Liverpool have abandoned their high press

One stat stood out after Liverpool’s win at Huddersfield.

The Reds had a total of 111 misplaced passes in the match.

Put simply, Liverpool’s ball retention was poor as they struggled to control possession.

Liverpool’s loose control of the ball ties in with Jurgen Klopp’s new approach this season.

Last year the Reds were famed for their high press. However those tactics have now been tweaked. As detailed in the Times:

(Klopp) has placed an emphasis on sitting back more when leading and saving energy against sides who counter the press by playing balls over the top.

Klopp hopes that this will bring reward by allowing his players to pace themselves.

(Klopp) said: “Last year, our strength was high pressing and then when there were moments when the opponents didn’t play football, it was like, ‘Sorry.’

Liverpool vs Red Star Belgrade

Liverpool have a win and a draw in the competition so far this season.

The Reds opened with a thrilling 3-2 victory over PSG at Anfield.

However in round two of the Champions League, Napoli defeat Liverpool 1-0 in Italy.

Klopp will know that back to back wins against Red Star Belgrade will put Liverpool in a commanding position to reach the knockout phase of the competition.
