Social media reacts as Wayne Rooney impresses on last England cap

Big night for Wayne Rooney

Former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney made his final appearance for England at Wembley this evening, playing 20 minutes in the 2-0 win over the USA.

There’s been much build-up to the game at Wembley on Thursday.

It was confirmed not too long ago that Wayne Rooney would come out of international retirement to play one last time.

That came after his retirement back in 2017, following his move to Everton.

England’s top goalscorer rejected a call-up by Gareth Southgate at the time and announced that he would be retiring from international duty.

Though, because of the way that happened, he never got the chance to say farewell to Wembley and the England fans.

Fast forward to the beginning of November and it was announced Rooney would be given the chance to have his farewell appearance.

That appearance would come against the United States, earning his 120th cap and wearing his iconic number 10 shirt.

Safe to say, this was one for the football romantics.

England coast to victory

Going into this game, England were expected to win and they certainly lived up to those expectations.

Jesse Lingard got the first goal when his curling effort was perfectly placed in the top right corner.

Youngster Trent Alexander-Arnold then added England’s second goal, Jadon Sancho setting the defender up to slam the ball home.

Finally, Callum Wilson scored a debut goal to seal a 3-0 win.

Rooney impresses in small cameo

What was amazing after Rooney’s substitution was that the former Manchester United man did actually impress during his cameo!

Despite only coming on for 20 minutes, he looked threatening going forward.

He first had a shot on target, an effort which was easily saved by Brad Guzan.

Then, he played a lovely ball over the top which almost put Ruben Loftus-Cheek through on goal.

Finally, he had another chance in added time to get his goal but Brad Guzan got down to deny him again.

While none of those came to anything, there was still a player in there as he rolled back the years.

That lead to praise on social media.
