Gunnedah’s Aaron Osmond and Tamworth’s Danielle Bishop win at North West Tennis Championships

TWO of the region’s fastest rising stars have shone at the recent North West Tennis Championships. Gunnedah’s Aaron Osmond and Tamworth’s Danielle Bishop were two of the youngest competitors at the annual event and both took home top honours. Osmond flexed his muscle on the way to taking out the men’s singles title, while Bishop outlasted the region’s best to claim the women’s championship. The two were not finished collecting silverware, as they then teamed up to add the mixed doubles trophy to their list of accomplishments. North West Tennis committee member Dale Martin said Osmond’s victory was “historic”. “I am pretty sure he is now the youngest person to win the North West men’s open championship” Martin said. “It is certainly a massive achievement and something Aaron should be very proud of.” Read Also: The North West Championships pits the best tennis players from across the region against each other annually, with Gunnedah and Tamworth boasting several past winners. “There was certainly a lot of quality players from right around our region,” Martin said. “That’s what makes the achievement of these two young players even more impressive. “They are both only 15 and were able to put together complete performances across the whole tournament. “Then for both of them to team up and take out the mixed doubles title is just icing on the cake.” Martin said both players had benefited from their hard work and coaching programs. “Being involved with NIAS and several coaching pathways has certainly helped Aaron a lot this year,” he said. “But these results don’t just happen, he and Danielle have worked exceptionally hard and should be very proud of themselves.” Sign up to receive The Leader’s breaking news and top stories straight to your inbox.
