According to the New York Post, the Pirates have “big interest” in former Phillies and Padres shortstop Freddy Galvis. This comes up in the context of the Yankees possibly viewing Galvis as a stopgap while Didi Gregorius is out. If this is accurate — and I put little stock in rumors coming out of the New York media — it seems unlikely that the Pirates would be real players unless and until the Yankees lose interest. Steamer projects Galvis for a whopping fWAR of 0.3 for 2019 (in 40 games). He has a lifetime batting line of 246/290/374. Apart from a strong 2016 season, UZR seems to regard him as roughly average on defense. DRS has him, in four seasons as a regular, as good in two and poor in two.
