Days after the NASCAR Cup Series season ended, Samantha Busch, who’s married to No. 18 Toyota driver Kyle Busch, posted a heartbreaking video on social media explaining that she suffered a miscarriage. The NASCAR power couple are trying to have a second child through in vitro fertilization (IVF), which is the same way they had their now-3-year-old son, Brexton.
They promised to talk more openly about IVF this time around and shared the intimate details of the process as a way to help and comfort others in a similar position. That openness extended to talking about losing their daughter late last month as the NASCAR season came to an end.
In a recent interview with PEOPLE magazine, the Busch family shared more about their devastating experience, like being excited to mail out special Christmas cards with Brexton wearing a big brother shirt. And when they knew something was wrong and went to the doctor, Samantha said, “She was still there”.
The miscarriage happened days before the NASCAR Awards in Las Vegas, and although Kyle was one of the final four drivers who competed for the Cup Series championship this season, he and the others ultimately lost to first-time champion Joey Logano. The awards night was to celebrate him, so the Busch family kept their crushing news to themselves in what was certainly a painful night.
“Kyle and I talked about it and we really didn’t want to take anything away from [series Champion] Joey [Logano] and his wife Brittany,” Samantha recalls. “That evening wasn’t about us.”
“It was really tough because we walked the red carpet that night and kept on having people congratulate us about the baby,” (Kyle) Busch adds quietly. “We just faked a smile and said thanks.”
Samantha said while they’re still going to try and have another child, she’s not ready to start this process all over again. She said she still cries sometimes thinking about the miscarriage and described it as feeling “like a personal failure” sometimes.
“We had wanted to be transparent in our IVF journey, but it truly never crossed our mind that it wouldn’t work the second time around,” says Samantha who, after years of trying to get pregnant naturally, also went through in vitro fertilization treatments to conceive their first child, Brexton. “Usually the second time is so much easier. Having a miscarriage never even crossed our minds.”
“All of this certainly tests your faith,” (Kyle) Busch adds. “There is just this endless list of questions as to [the] whys and hows. Inside, you know things happen for a reason, but it’s so hard.”
Being open about their experiences with IVF is one way they contribute to a community they created to talk about infertility. Helping others facing similar challenges, they started the Kyle and Samantha Busch Bundle of Joy Fund, which raises money to help families in North Carolina cover the high costs associated with infertility.
