Roger Federer knows he cannot win French Open, says Jurgen Melzer

In an interview to Tennis.net, the former top-10 player Jurgen Melzer commented on Roger Federer’s season and his future decision about the clay-court season in 2019. ‘He exactly knows what he is doing today.

Although, I was very surprised that this year he missed the clay-court season. He knows he cannot win Paris. There are too many now who can be dangerous there,’ said Melzer. ‘In Indian Wells I saw him arguing for the first time.

He criticized the umpire’, he added about the loss against Juan Martin del Potro in the Championship Clash. Asked if he saw himself becoming Austria’s Davis Cup team captain, Melzer replied: ‘If you take me, I will definitely do it.

But I think it can take one year or two to take a certain distance after the end of my sports career.’ Who does he think is the most similar player to Federer’s generation? ‘I would say Feli. He does not need to run a lot with his gamestyle.

He serves to big and he often hits 70, 75% first serves in, hits a great slice and he has an unbelievable body. David Ferrer is extreme for me as well, but it would be the worse for me to wake up every day and be able to beat the opponent only if I run.’ Melzer announced his retirement from professional tennis in 2018.

He last played the Vienna Open and defeated Milos Raonic in the first round. He was, however, forced to withdraw before the start of his second round due to illness. ALSO READ: Rafael Nadal: Worse players than David Ferrer won a Grand Slam title
