YSU’s Miklos instructs golf camp in Thailand

Youngstown State women’s golf coach Nate Miklos traveled overseas to Thailand earlier this month to serve as an instructor at the U.S. College Golf Camp for the third consecutive year.
The three-day camp, which is a combination of seminars and coaching, provides accomplished junior golfers with the unique experience of being instructed by prominent coaches from academic colleges and universities. The event took place Nov. 30-Dec. 2 at The Bonanza Resort in Khao Yai, Thailand. Campers also compete in a 36-hole tournament to earn points toward their Junior Golf Scoreboard.
The U.S. College Golf Camp is a staple of the U.S. College Sports Camp organization which started six years ago. It has become one of the most popular and successful camps of its type in Asia and draws campers from all over the world. It is an interactive-oriented camp that is open to entrants ages 7-18 and of all skill levels. The camp is designed, supervised and taught by U.S. college coaches who are experienced in working with every level of golfer from beginner to PGA Tour champions.
YSU will begin the spring portion of their 2018-19 season with the Motor City Cup at the Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. on Feb. 4-5.
LeBron day-to-day after groin strain
EL SEGUNDO, Calif.
LeBron James got good news Wednesday on his injured groin.
But his games-played streak will end anyway.
An MRI exam showed that the four-time NBA MVP merely strained his left groin in the Los Angeles Lakers’ victory at Golden State Warriors on Christmas night. James will likely be dealing with soreness for several days, and the Lakers said he won’t travel with them for their game Thursday in Sacramento.
From there, he will be listed as day-to-day.
Thursday will mark the first time James has sat since the final game of the 2016-17 regular season, which he took off for rest.
James had appeared in 156 consecutive games, going back to the start of the 2017 playoffs with Cleveland. His last extended absence due to injury was an eight-game stint to deal with back and knee aches midway through the 2014-15 season.
Sigi Schmid, former Crew coach, dies at 65
LOS ANGELES
Sigi Schmid, the winningest coach in MLS history, has died. He was 65.
Schmid’s family said he died Tuesday at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. Schmid was hospitalized three weeks ago as he awaited a heart transplant.
Schmid had an MLS-record 266 regular-season and postseason victories in 18 seasons with the LA Galaxy, Columbus Crew and Seattle Sounders. He led teams to two MLS titles, the first with the Galaxy in 2002 and the second with the Crew in 2008, and was a two-time MLS Coach of the Year.
A National Soccer Hall of Fame inductee, Schmid stepped down as coach of the Galaxy in September with six games left in the regular season.
Schmid coached UCLA for 19 seasons before moving on to MLS, leading the Bruins to three NCAA titles.
US beats Slovakia in world junior opener
VICTORIA, British Columbia
Mikey Anderson and Evan Barratt scored early in the third period and the United States rallied to beat Slovakia 2-1 on Wednesday night to open the World Junior Championship.
Kyle Keyser made 13 saves for the Americans, allowing only Marek Korencik’s goal late in the second period at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. Keyser stopped Andrej Kukuca on a penalty shot with 6:45 left to preserve the lead.
Slovakia’s Samuel Hlavaj also stopped a penalty shot, thwarting Jason Robertson in the second period, and finished with 32 saves.
The Americans will face Kazakhstan on Friday night, play Sweden on Saturday night and complete round-robin play against Finland on Monday night.
