Man City’s Fernandinho problem
It’s been a rough Christmas for Manchester City and Pep Guardiola.
With matches against Crystal Palace (h) and Leicester City (a) to kick off the holiday schedule, many may have thought that Man City woud be clocking up the wins as 2018 closes out.
However the Sky Blues have lost back to back games in the league to drop to third in the table.
Liverpool are seven points clear of Man City, while Tottenham are now second in the league a point above the Sky Blues.
Against Palace and Leicester, City lost without having Fernandinho in their starting XI.
The 33-year-old Brazilian is injured, and many are now commenting that City have no adequate replacement in their squad for the South American enforcer.
Chelsea & Cesc Fabregas
In the latest edition of the Transfer Window podcast, it’s been revealed by journalists Ian McGarry and Duncan Castles that Guardiola hopes to sign a new midfielder in January to deal with the Fernandinho problem.
In a surprise disclosure, it’s been claimed that Man City would consider signing Cesc Fabregas from Chelsea this winter.
Fabregas is now a fringe player at Chelsea who is struggling to get into the team.
Man City believe Cesc, who worked with Guardiola at Barcelona, could provide the back-up when Fernandinho is out.
Man City are open to landing Fabregas either on loan or in a permanent deal.
Should Cesc move to the Etihad Stadium, the transfer would bring back memories of when Chelsea icon Frank Lampard joined Man City.
It’s worth noting that Fabregas is out of contract at Chelsea at the end of the season.
Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Partey
Man City also have a second midfield target this January: Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Partey.
Thomas Partey, a Ghanaian international, is 25-year-old.
In the past few days, Thomas has told the press that he’s not happy at Atletico after starting just seven La Liga matches from a possible 17 so far this season:
Sometimes I do not feel happy at Atletico. If you want to change this feeling then you need to be playing in important games and feeling stronger, more confident.
I have played well so far this season when I have been on the pitch.
Thomas is under contract at Atletico until 2023.
Will Man City be able to prise him from Madrid this January?
