Pirates sign lefty Tyler Lyons to minors deal

The Pirates have signed left-handed reliever Tyler Lyons to a minor league contract. Lyons has spent parts of the last six seasons in the majors, all with St. Louis. He served as a swing man during parts of 2013-15, but has pitched strictly in relief since then. He put up solid numbers in 2016-17 over 80 major league games, with ERAs of 3.38 and 2.83, and xFIPs of 3.67 and 3.65. The bottom fell out in 2018, when he had an ERA of 8.64 in 27 games, which led to him being designated for assignment.

Lyons throws a 90 mph fastball and relies very heavily on a slider. For his career, he has a big platoon split, with a .762 opponents’ OPS by right-handed hitters and .606 by left-handed hitters. It’s probably safe to assume he’ll get a non-roster invitation to major league spring training.
