Atletico’s Diego Godin agrees to join Inter Milan in the summer

Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin is set to join Serie A giants Inter Milan at the end of the season, according to Italian sources.

World-class

Godin, 32, has been on the books of Atletico since 2010, and is widely regarded as one of, if not the finest central-defender in all of world football.

His grit and leadership at the back for Diego Simeone’s men personify everything that Los Colchoneros stand for, with the South American’s  showings over the last 8 years having proven absolutely crucial to Atletico racking up a La Liga title, Copa Del Rey, 2 Europa Leagues, 2 UEFA Super Cups and reaching a pair of Champions League finals during his time with the club.

Godin’s rumoured new deal

As such, recent reports confirming that Godin is yet to put pen to paper on a new contract in the Spanish capital have come as something of a surprise.

The Uruguayan stopper was the subject of a deadline day offer from Manchester United during the summer, when the Red Devils were said to have offered Godin a 3-year contract worth a hefty 9 million Euro-per-season.

However, in the end, Atletico refused to part ways with their captain, with subsequent reports having emerged that the two parties had in fact come to an agreement on the terms of a new deal:

Official confirmation of the veteran’s improved contract at the Wanda Metropolitano was never forthcoming, though.

Inter bound

Spanish outlet Marca shed some light on Godin’s current situation with Atletico earlier this week, by suggesting that the board of the La Liga giants had failed to follow through on their promise of a significant hike in their star defender’s wages.

And, as per a number of reliable sources throughout the Italian media over the last 24 hours, Los Rojiblancos’ carelessness looks set to cost them dearly this summer.

Godin is widely-reported to have reached an agreement to join Serie A outfit Inter Milan on a free transfer, upon the expiration of his contract at the Wanda Metropolitano:
