A staggering statistic which perfectly sums up both the current plight of Real Madrid and unadulterated brilliance of Lionel Messi has been turning heads across social media tonight.
Getafe 1-2 Barcelona
La Liga leaders Barcelona travelled to the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez for their latest league outing this evening.
With Sevilla and Atletico Madrid having battled to a 1-1 draw this afternoon, and Real Madrid having subsequently fallen to a surprise 2-0 defeat at home to Real Sociedad, Ernesto Valverde’s men were aware ahead of kick-off that a 3-point haul would see them open up a healthy 5-point gap atop the Spanish top-flight table.
And 3 points was exactly what the champions eventually picked up, courtesy of a 2-1 win.
Lionel Messi put the Blaugrana in front with 20 minutes on the clock, slotting home into an empty net from an acute angle.

And Luis Suarez doubled the visitors’ lead shortly before half-time, with a sumptuous volley from the edge of the box:

Hosts Getafe did manage to pull a goal back on the stroke of the interval through Jaime Mata, but, in the end, a goalless second-half saw Barca emerge victorious.
Messi vs Real
And, in the aftermath of the Blaugrana’s latest win, a statistic surrounding the contrasting form of Lionel Messi and Real Madrid so far this season has come to light online.
In failing to find the net versus Real Sociedad earlier today, Real saw their goal tally for the La Liga campaign stall at 26.
And, in notching his side’s opener versus Getafe tonight, Messi took his tally for the season to 16.
However, Messi has also racked up 10 assists to go along with his goals, meaning, incredibly, that the Argentine superstar has directly contributed to as many league goals thus far this season as Real Madrid have scored:

This stat comes despite Messi having missed a pair of La Liga fixtures with a broken arm in October.
