Tennis – The venue to be used at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics will not be ready as per the original schedule of July 2019 and will instead by ready only by March 2020, according to the Japanese media outlet NHK. The Ariake Tennis Park in Tokyo is undergoing renovations to accommodate tennis and wheelchair tennis events at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
A contractor was hired to work on 17 outdoor tennis courts but work on the same has stopped as the contractor went bankrupt in October 2018. According to NHK, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has entered into a contract with another construction firm on Friday to work on nine of the courts and the same will now be ready only by March 2020 rather than the original schedule of July 2019 but that no disruption will be caused to the Games.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is hoping to have some of the courts ready by late August for an event that will be served as a test run for the Olympic Games, which is expected to be a banner event for tennis fans. Several super stars of the game, including Roger Federer, Serena Williams and Venus Williams have said that they intend to play the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 although all of them are in their late 30s – an age by which most tennis players are well into retirement.
Japanese fans will also be very keenly following their local hopes for a medal – Kei Nishikori and Naomi Osaka, who won the US Open last year.
