Fountain Valley youth baseball clinic helps kick off celebrity golf tournament – Orange County Register

Who’s ready for baseball?

As a kid, I lived for baseball. My younger years included four years of Little League – as a starting pitcher for the Phillies and Yankees, and as an outfielder for the Orioles and Giants. Sadly, my playing career came to end while playing for the Giants when I broke my foot in a non-baseball-related fall.

Still, life was all about baseball when I was growing up. During recess, my friends and I would flip and lag baseball cards, which was sort of juvenile gambling back then. Eventually, our teachers would threaten to take our baseball cards away until the end of the school day.

Why the sudden trip down baseball memory lane?

On Monday, Jan. 28, some of the more popular former Major League Baseball stars will be on hand for the KinderVison Celebrity Golf Tournament at Seacliff Country Club in Huntington Beach. The day before, several of the MLB alums will be a part of a youth clinic in Fountain Valley.

The golf tournament is unique because each foursome will have a fifth member – a  former Major League player.

Among the players invited are former Angels Tim Foli, Bob Boone, Fred Lynn, Rod Carew, Clyde Wright, Tim Salmon and Bobby Grich, as well as former Dodgers Fernando Valenzuela, Dusty Baker, Tommy Davis, Joe Moeller and Al Downing, just to name a few.

The golf tournament features a 10:30 a.m. shotgun start. Cost is $330 for a single player or $1,200 for a foursome. A celebrity reception and silent auction begin at 5 p.m., followed by a dinner, awards and a Hall of Fame panel Q&A at 6 p.m. Tickets for the dinner and reception are $100 (single), $150 (couple), $750 (table of eight).

As I mentioned earlier, this actually is a two-day event. On Sunday, Jan. 27, current and former Major League Baseball players will be on hand for a free youth clinic at the Fountain Valley Sports Park. Youngsters, ages 6-15, will be coached on baseball fundamentals including throwing, hitting, base running, fielding, catching and pitching.

The clinic is set for 1 to 4 p.m. on Fountain Valley Little League Fields No. 14 and  No. 15 at the Sports Park, 16400 Brookhurst St. To register for the clinic, go to surveymonkey.com/r/2019CAclinic
