The 2019 Australian Open, the tennis season’s first Grand Slam, began Monday, Jan. 14, at Rod Laver Arena inside Melbourne Park and will conclude with the men’s singles championship Sunday, Jan. 27. The women’s singles final is Jan. 26.
In the men’s bracket, it’s a dream final between Rafael Nadal vs. Novak Djokovic, the two top-ranked players in the world. Both advanced through the tournament with relative ease, including straight-sets victories in masterclass semifinals matches in which they combined to lose just 10 total games. Nadal defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2, 6-4, 6-0; Djokovic took care of Lucas Pouille 6-0, 6-2, 6-2.

The meeting between the world No. 1 and No. 2 is their first in Melbourne since a six-hour final in 2012, a match Djokovic won. They’ve gone head-to-head 52 times in their careers with Djokovic winning 27 — including the 2018 Wimbledon final in their most recent meeting. The two have 31 Grand Slam titles between them.
Djokovic is aiming to become the first man to win a seventh Australian Open, while Nadal seeks his fifth title in Melbourne.
Naomi Osaka defeated Petra Kvitova on Saturday to claim the women’s singles championship, vaulting her to the No. 1 world ranking after also winning the 2018 U.S. Open.
