Supporters of Chelsea have flooded to Twitter this evening to respond to the news of Alvaro Morata’s transfer to La Liga giants Atletico Madrid being made official.
Morata’s Chelsea career
Morata made the move to Stamford Bridge from Real Madrid in the summer of 2017, after being deemed surplus to requirements in the Spanish capital for the second time in his career.
Chelsea splashed out a club-record fee with the potential to rise to £70 million to secure Morata’s signature, but the 26-year-old’s time in London since proved far from straightforward.
To Morata’s credit, his career in England actually started out in hugely-impressive fashion. The striker took to the Premier League like a duck to water, racking up 7 goals in his first 7 appearances.
However, the second-half of his debut campaign proved a far more testing affair. All told, between January and the end of the season, the Spaniard managed a paltry 3 goals.
Sevilla bound?
And Morata’s difficulties since carried over into the first-half of the current season. Although the former Juventus man notched 9 goals across all competitions, his finishing and general link-up play left a lot to be desired, leading to Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri often opting for Eden Hazard as a false 9 of late, relegating Morata to the bench.
Morata joins Atletico
As such, rumours had been rampant since the opening of the January transfer window that the Spanish international would be allowed to depart Stamford Bridge this month.
La Liga giants Atletico Madrid emerged as the leading contenders for the 26-year-old over the last couple of weeks, with Gonzalo Higuain’s arrival at Stamford Bridge last Wednesday having opened the path for Morata’s exit.
