Milos Raonic should not play tennis, says former French Open winner

Former world 4 and 1976 French Open winner Adriano Panatta criticized Milos Raonic’s boring game. In an interview, presenting his book on the tennis history, Panatta slammed today’s modern tennis. ‘Now there are very strong guys but who play in the same way‘, said Panatta.

But after four games I already know that they will do, so why should I keep seeing them play? One that makes me angry is Raonic. He comes and hits a 200km/h serve. He should not play tennis…’ During his career, Panatta, who also won 1976 Rome and Davis Cup, did not feel the need to count on his closest ones’ support.

‘I had no one with me. My father came to see me twice, my wife almost never, I did not feel the need. Federer instead is watched by his wife all the days, and then they see each other in the hotel as well, I could not deal with it.’

Panatta feels that there is too much professionalism in tennis now: ‘At my time we as players enjoyed ourselves. Now I do not go in the locker room anymore. Anyone stays there alone or with his team, there is much less happiness.’

Towards the final pages of his book, Panatta wrote a list of the best 40 tennis players ever in the Open Era. He is not there, while Marin Cilic is: why? ‘Looking at the numbers, I am not even on the top 100. If we speak about the guys who knew how to play tennis, then it’s different.’
