Australia v Sri Lanka second Test day two at Manuka Oval.
Joe Burns has fallen short in his quest for a maiden Test double century, chopping on for 180 against on day two against Sri Lanka.
Having resumed the day on 172, Burns dragged a wide delivery from Kasun Rajitha onto his stumps as Sri Lanka made the most of a relatively new ball in overcast conditions that forced the Manuka Oval lights to be switched on.
After 115 overs, Australia is 5-463 with Kurtis Patterson (65*) and Tim Paine (27*) looking to pile on the runs.

SRI LANKA’S POOR FIELDING PROVING COSTLY
Despite Australia coming up against an under-par Sri Lankan side, former England captain Michael Vaughan believes the Aussie batters can only be judged on runs.
Vaughan also lamented Sri Lanka’s poor fielding, that included dropping Joe Burns in the opening session on day one.
“You can only do what is in front of you. Your currency is big scores …. That’s all you can judge players on,” Vaughan told Fox Cricket’s Cricket AM.
“Sri Lanka is full of injuries, full of inexperience and the pitch flat. They’re not a great attack, they’ve fielded awfully. You’d expect to score runs against these kind of bowlers.
“You’ve got to get big scores against this kind of attack.”
KHAWAJA MAY NOT SEE RED BEFORE ENGLAND
Usman Khawaja’s path to the Ashes could be devoid of red-ball cricket if he is given the one-day nod by Australian selectors in the lead up to the World Cup.
Desperately out of form and with a maximum of just one Test innings between now and the Ashes, Khawaja has fallen from Australia’s best batsman at the start of the summer to arguably the most under fire.
The 32-year-old has scored just 209 runs at 23.22 this home summer, a far cry from his lofty 141 to save a Test match in Dubai against Pakistan in October.
With David Warner and Steve Smith returning, and Joe Burns and Marcus Harris finding form, Khawaja may need a statement long-form innings for both himself and selectors before the side for the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston on August 1 is picked.
The only problem for Khawaja is where that could possibly happen given his schedule.
Khawaja formed part of Australia’s one-day team against India last month, and if selected will head to the subcontinent for a return series starting on March 2. That will almost certainly rule him out of the first round of the Sheffield Shield for Queensland after the Big Bash League, as well as the two that follow.
Australia then have a one-day series against Pakistan in the UAE in late March and early April, ruling him out of the rest of the Shield competition. An Australian A side will also tour England this winter, but it will run concurrently with the World Cup meaning that if Khawaja is picked in that 15-man squad, he against won’t play red-ball cricket.
That could also give a chance to a number of top-order competitors to impress. And unlike Burns, Glenn Maxwell, Cameron Bancroft and Shaun Marsh, Khawaja does not yet have a county deal for next season, potentially leaving him high and dry for red-ball cricket.
Ultimately, it means Khawaja’s next long-format match could be on July 23, when Australia play Australia A in the only lead-up match before the Ashes.

HEAD AND BURNS COMBINE FOR HUGE STAND
Batting together for the first time, the pair took few risks early but punished anything loose from a Sri Lankan attack missing their three quicks from the Gabba through injury.
The century also sets up a shootout with Marcus Harris over the next six months of first-class cricket, assuming David Warner returns from his ban for the Ashes.
Despite debuting in 2014-15 at No. 6 for Australia, Burns sees himself solely as an opener.
“I think if you do open the batting, you’re well equipped to bat in multiple positions but, to be honest, to get picked for Australia — it’s on the back of my runs for Queensland,” Burns said.
“I’ve always said that I think you need to be committed to being an opener.
“Whatever’s put in front of me, I just try and work as hard as I can at training and be as well prepared as possible and, for the last few years, it’s as an opening batter.”
Head looks a certainty for the Ashes squad with four scores above 50 this summer.
Sri Lanka were their own worst enemies, dropping Burns and Patterson once each and Head twice — all from relatively simple chances at Test level.
Sri Lanka will chase early wickets on day two, while Australia will want to bat long in order to try and set up a first series victory under Justin Langer in all forms of cricket.

With an upcoming Ashes series ahead in England, Lehmann believes the left hander should focus on the red ball and not play in the upcoming ODI series’ against India and Sri Lanka, ahead of the World Cup.

Khawaja’s former coach suggested his dismissal was “lazy” and out of character for a player who has scored seven Test centuries.

“The way he got out, was very unlike Usman Khawaja, it was a lazy shot. He’s not like that, he’s a better player than that,” Lehmann said.

“He’s just looking a bit flat when he plays. He’s not as sharp early on as he was say in Perth, when he got his highest score of the summer. He got the 70, looked sharp and ready to score. He’s a better player than he has shown, we know.”

Lehmann also suggested Khawaja’s family issues would be playing on his mind, with Khawaja’s brother Arsalan arrested in December.
“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”
“The family issues certainly would’ve affected him, there’s no doubt about that. When you’ve got issues going on with your loved ones, cricket takes second string. We’re only playing a game.”
