‘Looking back, I’d prefer to play in Federer, Nadal era again’

Despite a knee injury he suffered at the Shanghai Masters, the Juan Martin del Potro’s 2018 season was the best ever as he won Acapulco and Indian Wells, reached the US Open final and in August became the world No.

3 for the first time in his career just behind of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Del Potro said: ‘I thought I was the world No. 3 for my first time at 30 years, but then I suffered a fracture.

Before the injuries I could never break the barrier of Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray, and I achieved it now after all what I went through. If I could do my career again, I would choose the Roger, Rafa and Nole era. They made me a better player.’

On his future, del Potro added: ‘I see myself playing tennis for a few more years. In five years? I do not know it. I will definitely be closer to Tandil.’ On how he managed to go forward despite dealing with physical issues, the current world No.

5 admitted: ‘You have times where leaving tennis crosses your mind, but for your own love, the proudness and passion for what you do, you keep fighting to be back as soon as possible.’ He also remarked that playing the 2019 Davis Cup is not on his plans: ‘Now it’s the time for the younger players.
