Carolina Hurricanes GM Don Waddell announced Sunday that goaltender Scott Darling is taking a leave of absence from the team, according to the Raleigh News & Observer’s Chip Alexander.
Darling, 30, has spent the majority of the season with the teams’ AHL affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers posting a 5-6-0 record with a 3.40 goals-against average. In eight starts this season for Carolina, he went 2-4-2 with a 3.33 GAA and .884 save percentage.
His last appearance for the Hurricanes was a 5-4 shootout loss Dec. 14 to the WashingtonCapitals.
Canes GM Don Waddell says goalie Scott Darling has taken a “personal leave of absence.” Waddell said Darling, through his agent, asked for time off. Waddell says Darling “from a mental standpoint needs to regroup, basically.”

Originally drafted by Phoenix in 2007, the netminder burst onto the scene in 2015 when he filled in for the injured Corey Crawford during the Chicago Blackhawks Stanley Cup championship run.
Before being acquired in a trade by the Hurricanes in April 2017, he posted a record of 39-17-9 with 2.37 GAA and .923 save percentage in the Windy City. Carolina signed him to a four-year $16.6 million deal that May.
At this time, there is no set timetable for his return.
