Kurtis Patterson’s case for Ashes selection is getting stronger by the day, with the New South Wales left-hander following up his maiden Test century with a Sheffield Shield ton against Western Australia.

Patterson, who made his Test debut against Sri Lanka last month, took 201 balls to bring up his hundred against WA at Bankstown Oval in a glittering display against the Dukes ball.

It is Patterson’s fifth triple-figure score across just seven innings – 100*, 8 (grade), 114*, 30, 157*, 102*, 167 (grade) — this year including grade cricket.

The 25-year-old’s Monday effort was punctuated by 13 boundaries, including two sixes, by the time he reached the milestone.

Patterson put himself firmly in the race for Ashes selection at the start of the month with an unbeaten 114 for Australia against Sri Lanka at Canberra.

The 27-year-old offered one very difficult close-range catch on 97 in an otherwise chanceless innings to be on 117 at the break.

Wakim became the fifth Tasmanian to score a century on Sheffield Shield debut.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Wakim and Jake Doran (47) added 115 for the fourth wicket before the latter was smartly stumped by Harry Nielsen off the bowling of part-timer Travis Head (1-75).

South Australia have used eight bowlers in delivering 137 overs, on a third successive day of extreme Adelaide heat.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

The Shield’s leading run-scorer Matthew Wade highlighted day two with a sparkling 77 that lifted Tasmania to a position of strength against the winless Redbacks.

Nick Winter (2-59) has returned the best figures with Chadd Sayers collecting just one wicket from 30 gruelling overs in his first Shield match after his return from injury.

Maxwell, who made 56, put together 84 runs with D’Arcy Short for the third wicket to put Australia on course before Jasprit Bumrah hit back with three wickets.

Bumrah got debutant Peter Handscomb caught behind for 13 and then bowled Coulter-Nile on the final ball of the 19th over to keep the game in balance.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Jhye Richardson and Cummins — both not out on seven each — then kept their cool in the final six balls against Umesh Yadav to steer the Aussies home.

But the day belonged to Coulter-Nile who returned figures of 3-26 in his four overs, receiving the man of the match award.

Indian batsman K.L. Rahul, who returned to the side after a suspension for sexist comments during a controversial TV chat show appearance with Hardik Pandya, hit 50 off 36 balls.

His 55-run second wicket stand with skipper Virat Kohli, who made 24, gave India a brisk start but the hosts lost momentum after losing three quick wickets.

Adam Zampa got Kohli’s prized scalp with his leg spin and Coulter-Nile claimed the wicket of Rahul to check India on a tricky pitch.

Veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni made an unbeaten 29. The second match is in Bangalore on Wednesday.

Kevin O’Brien top scored with 74 off 47 balls before falling to Rashid in the 16th over that took the game away from Ireland.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

O’Brien and Andy Balbirnie (47) had kept Ireland in the hunt when they pushed the total to 72-1 in the first six overs.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Nabi (0-28) put the brakes on Ireland’s charge by bowling a steady four-over spell before Rashid got the important breakthrough by having O’Brien caught behind.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“Feeling very good that if you’re not doing well with the ball, then you’re doing well with the bat,” Nabi said after winning both man of the match and series awards.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Earlier, Hazratullah Zazai, who had smashed 162 not out on Saturday, provided Afghanistan with another brisk start by scoring 31 off 17 balls. But Boyd Rankin dismissed Zazai and Usman Ghani (13) in the fifth over before Nabi single-handedly took the total beyond the 200-run mark by smashing seven sixes and six boundaries in his brisk knock.

“},{“contentType”:”VIDEO”,”marbleApiEnv”:”prod”,”playerType”:”player”,”videoId”:719916},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Rankin (3-53) claimed wickets but conceded over 13 runs an over as Nabi scored boundaries at will.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Nabi was caught on the edge of the mid-wicket boundary in the 18th over. “We were in the game 10-12 overs into the chase and then we just lost some wickets,” Stirling said. “I think if you get in, you really need to go big.” Afghanistan beat Ireland by five wickets in the first match before posting 278-3 – a world record for a T20 international – in the second match on Saturday for an 84-run victory.

A five-match ODI series between the teams starts Thursday.
